Context : The last ten years have seen the strong rise of high energy picosecond laser systems based on ytterbium ion with average powers higher than 1 kW from fiber or solid-state lasers [1]. This technological and scientific challenge opens the way to many application fields such as aerospace, medicine, plasma physics at a high repetition rate, long distance filamentation. Moreover, nonlinear post-compression of ytterbium systems at several hundred watts with capillaries or Herriot cells has shown a wide interest by demonstrating impressive time compression ratios [2] annoucing an imminent technological break with current Ti: sapphire systems at 1 kHz. 

PhD subject: LEAP-HORIZON project aims to produce picosecond pulses of 1 Joule at the rate of 1 kHz (average power 1 kW). A Gaussian-mode 200W 1kHz thin disk-based regenerative amplifier is in development but these pre-amplifiers suffer from a poor spatial overlap between top-hat pump profiles and Gaussian cavity mode affecting the optical performance and requiring the use of large aperture components. An alternative way is the design of flat mode amplifiers [3]) but adapted to the case of Yb: YAG thin discs. This spatial beam shaping will enable a new post-compression scheme based on self-phase modulation of flats beams in thin films [4] or Herriot cells. The PhD work will consist in combining flat-mode thin-disk regenerative amplifier development and the postcompression : 

  • Design and realization of beam shaping adapted to thin-disk amplifiers. 
  • Realization of high-power flat-mode thin-disk Yb :YAG amplifier in different regimes (CW, ns, ps), 
  • Post compression by self-phase modulation in thin films or Herriot cell. 

This subject has a high potential for publication in high-ranked international journals and international conference meeting insuring a high-level training in laser physics for industrial or academic R&D.

The Visusal Optics and Biophotonics Laboratory of the Institute of Optics of CSIC in Madrid offers a FPI predoctoral grant linked to the project FIS2017-84753-R: “New optical technologies to understand and treat myopia”. The FPI 2017 call is now open, until 29th October 2018. 

Funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the FPI programme, offers employment contracts for the training of university graduates who wish to do a PhD at R+D Centers in subjects associated with specific R+D projects financed through the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities R+D+i State Plan. 

More details of the grant:

  • 4-year contract.
  • Gross salary of 16.422€ (19.000€ following the PhD completion).
  • Separate budget for short stays in other institutions and tuition fees for the
  • Doctoral Degree Programme.
  • Enrolment in training activities in the framework of Marie Curie funded projects and in international conferences.

The host lab, Visual Optics and Biophotonics Lab at the Institute of Optics led by Prof. Susana Marcos, is highly international recognized in the fields of visual optics and ocular imaging. The Institute of Photonics (Physics Department) at the University of Strathclyde seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Semiconductor Laser Networks for Neuro-Inspired Information Processing functionalities. The post holder will work on the ‘BRAIN LASER’ project, funded by the US Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG), to develop cutting-edge research in photonic technologies for neuromorphic (brain-like) information processing. Applicants should have a PhD in Photonic Technologies or in Laser Physics/Engineering and have experience with semiconductor lasers and/or optoelectronic systems. Experience with the characterisation of nonlinear dynamics in laser systems and/or photonic (integrated) circuits would also be an advantage.

Se distinguen dos tipos de proyectos:

a) Proyectos I+D+i tipo A, dirigidos por investigadores jóvenes, pero con contribuciones científico-técnicas relevantes e innovadoras, que no hayan dirigido anteriormente proyectos de investigación de convocatorias nacionales.

Dentro de este tipo de proyectos, se incluyen los Proyectos de I+D+i tipo JIN, para jóvenes investigadores sin vinculación o con vinculación temporal.

b) Proyectos I+D+i tipo B, dirigidos investigadores con una trayectoria investigadora consolidada.

En el ámbito del reto 2 (Bioeconomía: sostenibilidad de los sistemas de producción primaria y forestales, seguridad y calidad alimentaria, investigación marina y marítima y bioproductos) se incluyen los proyectos de I+D+i tipo RTA, para las instituciones y objetivos que, hasta la entrada en vigor del Plan Estatal, han venido siendo gestionados en el sistema INIA-CCAA, incluyendo aquellos proyectos cuyos objetivos estén dirigidos al diagnóstico y control de plagas y enfermedades, tanto en especies vegetales como en especies animales, que hayan sido detectadas en territorio español por primera vez en los últimos tres años.

Los proyectos tipo A y B podrán estar dirigidos por uno o dos investigadores principales y los proyectos tipo JIN y tipo RTA solo podrán están dirigidos por un investigador principal.

Todos los tipos de proyectos podrán presentarse con un equipo de investigación y en las modalidades de proyecto individual, con un equipo de investigación, o proyecto coordinado, formado por varios subproyectos, cada uno de los cuales contará con un equipo de investigación.

Dos tipos de proyectos:

Ambos tipos de proyectos podrán estar dirigidos por uno o dos investigadores principales y podrán realizarse bajo las modalidades de proyecto individual, con un equipo de investigación, o proyecto coordinado, formado por varios subproyectos, cada uno de los cuales contará con un equipo de investigación. El plazo de ejecución de los proyectos y subproyectos será, con carácter general, de 3 o 4 años y excepcionalmente de 2.

La cuantía máxima destinada a financiar las ayudas de este subprograma será de 125.500.000,00 euros, que se distribuyen conforme a la siguiente estimación: hasta un máximo de 80.500.000,00 euros para la modalidad de subvención y hasta 45.000.000,00 euros para la modalidad de anticipo reembolsable. Las ayudas se cofinanciaran por el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER).

Las ayudas podrán financiar total o parcialmente el presupuesto solicitado en las propuestas presentadas. Su cuantía individual se determinará en cada caso en función del coste financiable real de la actuación, a tenor de sus objetivos, necesidades y duración, y de las disponibilidades presupuestarias. El presupuesto de las ayudas financiará gastos de personal, material inventariable y fungible, gastos de viajes, publicaciones científicas, patentes y otros gastos directamente relacionados con el proyecto, en las condiciones detalladas en el artículo 9 de la resolución de convocatoria.
